Chapter 9
We went out to the DJ’s station as soon as we returned to Satine. Anthony kept a hand on the small of my back, not pushing but keeping close to my every step. I tried to shake him off twice, discreetly of course. He feigned not noticing, not so discreetly grinning at me. Daddy was part of his genetic makeup or something. At the moment it was a small offense though, and I wasn’t freaking out over it so I made the small concession. Hopefully he’d work out some of those clingy needs that way, and I wouldn’t run into monster manifestations of it … like hugging me.
As we walked by, a young couple kissed and hugged. I didn’t turn my head, walked as if I hadn’t even noticed their existence. But I stared out of the corner of my eye. I envied them for the ease with which they touched, for her smooth glide into his arms. I wondered what each of them felt when they embraced. What did a normal, full-soul person feel when hugging or being hugged? It had been at least two years since I’d last been hugged. Honestly, I didn’t remember much about it. I hadn’t been overly touchy-feely back then either, but now I regretted not paying more attention to each hug. It was small things like that I took for granted back then: being hugged, making out with a boyfriend without going insane because he’d climbed on top of me, coming home to talk to my mom about whatever. God, how I missed talking to her. And the soft crinkles around her eyes and lips when she smiled. Small things really hurt worse than the big, dramatic ones. Everything reminded me of the small things.
“This is Chris,” Anthony hollered in my ear.
I nodded at the DJ and shook his hand. The guy smiled, nodded as Anthony told him something.
“So what should I play for your dancing pleasure?” Chris asked.
It very tempting to roll my eyes at him, but I didn’t. “I loved the beats last night. Just none of that throbby house stuff. I’m not a fan.”
The man nodded gravely. Yeah, he wasn’t a fan either. Fabulous. The frequency of my headaches would drop dramatically. Anthony snuck a hand up my spine. Well, maybe the headaches wouldn’t disappear entirely. I made to turn around and face the cube, and Chris grabbed the mic and grinned at me widely.
“And, the lady we’ve all been waiting for, Varanaaaa!”
Christ, what was this, a boxing match? I pinched the bridge of my nose under the tilted hat and walked up the stairs to my cube. Men. A few of the ones hanging around the cube actually clapped, looking all excited. I recognized them from last night, so I smiled and took an ornate bow. A seductive beat began throbbing though the room, and I assumed my starting position. I threw my body into the beat and ate
